I. Jaremaga Culture No.6
The session opened with an article by Douglas Jarrell (of Nanzan University), which Mr. Kitahara asked us to read as if we were JHS third graders. The article was specifically chosen by Mr. Kitahara for its \u201ccultural\u201d content \u2013 that is, its themes related to Japanese culture. Such emphasis on culture is especially important for students, as the study of language can hardly be undertaken with any success without at least some appreciation of the sociocultural context in which it is used. (Incidentally, I recently learned that the university where I received my undergraduate degree in English has decided this past year to change the title of the \u201cEnglish Language and Literature\u201d major to \u201cEnglish Language, Literature, and Culture.\u201d)

Mr. Jarrell\u2019s article reads (rather like a journal entry): \u201cI did my usual 12 km walk from Atsuta Shrine to Fujimae Tidal Flat on Jan. 1. Four of us left at 2 AM and arrived at about 6 AM, stopping at two shrines along the way. We were greeted with sake, \u201csweet sake\u201d and a bonfire at each shrine, but this year it was so mild that we didn\u2019t really need them. Many people came to Fujimae by car and joined us as we watched the first sunrise of the year.\u201d

Mr. Kitahara\u2019s procedure for using the article as teaching material is to:
(1) first, have Ss read silently for one minute and record the number of seconds it took to finish;
(2) have them read a comprehension question (for this article: \u201dWhat did the people see at Fujimae Tidal Flat?\u201d) and underline the corresponding answer in the passage;
(3) after one minute, ask the comprehension question to the class and have them answer together;
(4) read the article aloud to the class;
(5) go over and quiz Ss on underlined words and phrases in the passage (e.g., \u201dwere greeted\u201d \u2013 when did we learn this form before?); tell Ss to look up words in the dictionary; avoid the mother tongue as much as possible;
(6) ask the class questions about \u201chatsumode\u201d: \u201cDoes your family go to shrines and temples at New Year\u2019s?\u201d etc.; have Ss answer in pairs;
(7) have students get in pairs and discuss the reasons for why Japanese people have the tradition of \u201chatsumode\u201d on New Year\u2019s Day, as if explaining to a foreigner; they may refer to their personal experiences or borrow words and phrases from the Jaremaga article.

We tried the above procedure with Mr. K and our fellow Kitaken attendees. (It was informative for me as an ALT to learn a bit more about the purpose of \u201chatsumode\u201d from S sensei and I sensei.) Mr. K demonstrated how teachers can use short topical articles not only as interesting material to practice reading skills, but also to practice impromptu speaking skills and cultivate a deeper understanding of one\u2019s own culture by explaining it to others.

II. Board work with adjectives, comparatives, and superlatives
Mr. K shared his example of how to introduce comparative\/superlative forms of adjectives by first getting Ss to recall adjectives they\u2019ve learned and sorting these into two groups on the BB, -er\/-est or more\/most, according to their endings.

III. Video of Mr. Kitahara\u2019s observation of a lesson in Himeji City
Mr. K showed us a video of a 2nd grade lesson that he observed in Himeji city, Hyogo Prefecture. Before watching though, Mr. K had us skim over the lesson plan, as well as the related pages in the textbook (New Horizon) on which it was based. Mr. K made a point of telling us that the vocabulary for this lesson had already been taught previously. I will describe the contents of the lesson that we watched, and then move on to the discussion of the video, including Mr. K\u2019s comments.
1. The lesson begins with a standard greeting: Ss all rise formally and the T greets in English. Ss respond in kind. Then follows the 3 questions about the day, date, and weather.
2. The first activity is a small talk. (1) The Ss read the topic in English: \u201cWhat is important in your daily life?\u201d They check the meaning in Japanese. (2) The T then models an answer with a reason. An example conversation is displayed on the monitor screen. She then asks a S to answer the topic question. (3) The Ss make pairs and ask each other. The T reminds them of conditions (voice, speed, etc.). (4) The T calls on pairs of S volunteers to demo their conversation for the class.
3. Grammar point: The small talk topic seems to be a way of practicing gerund phrases in subject position. (E.g. \u201cStudying English\/Practicing baseball is important.\u201d) The T reviews the structure of gerund phrases, then segues into the main topic of the lesson: homestays. The \u201cRounds\u201d that follow are from the New Horizon textbook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Round 1 \u201cGet the Gist\u201d: T introduces the topic of homestays and then the situation presented in the textbook. (I.e. Kaito is home staying with an elderly couple, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson.) Ss open their textbooks to the passage in which Kaito describes his stay. T also displays the same passage on the screen. She tells the students to follow along with their finger in the textbook while the audio plays. Ss try to answer a question in Japanese which tests their ability to understand \u201cthe gist\u201d of the passage. They circle one of three optional answers (also in Japanese) which the T reads out beforehand. T calls on Ss to confirm the answer.
5. Round 2 \u201cFocus on the Details\u201d: This round consists of 3 questions that ask for specific information on the text. T goes over some of the vocabulary in the questions and confirms the meaning in Japanese. Ss individually look for the answers in the text and underline them. T allow Ss to check in pairs and then calls on Ss, who stand up before saying the answer in a loud voice. T confirms whether the rest of the class was able to find the same answers by prompting Ss to say \u201cI got it\u201d and raise their hands. Throughout, T takes a few moments to further elaborate on the answer. For example, one question is \u201dWhat is one of Mrs. Wilson\u2019s hobbies?\u201d The answer is \u201ca word game.\u201d The T shows a picture of the classic board game \u201dScrabble\u201d on the screen and explains the game to the Ss. After all the questions are finished, T asked the class to think about which of the questions are most important to consider in a homestay.
6. Round 3 \u201cThink and Express Yourself\u201d: This is a fill-in-the-blank exercise. Ss select vocabulary from a word bank and fill in gaps in a summary of the passage with the appropriate word. T reads the word bank with Ss first. Ss work individually, check in pairs, then finally check as a class.
7. Read aloud practice: T displays the full original text on the screen and asks the Ss, \u201cIs it long? Do you want to read it?\u201d (The class sounds reluctant.) An abridged version suddenly succeeds the original on the screen. (Class sounds happier with this one.) T confirms the meaning of key words and phrases. This is followed by choral reading (while holding up the text) and individual buzz reading (while standing up).
8. Communication activity (20 min): The Ss imagine they are Kaito and brainstorm ideas for what sentences they can post on a study abroad site that tell about the benefits of homestays. (1) T displays an example by the ALT (who had already returned to his home in Australia and had sent his example from there, as Mr. K informed us). \u201cTalking with a host family is interesting. We can learn different cultures. It is important to communicate with people.\u201d (A bit vague, but perhaps suitable for beginners.) (2) Ss think of ideas individually. (T skipped this part and went onto the pair discussion.) (3) Ss discuss and practice expressing their ideas in pairs. Prompts are displayed on the screen to help slower learners. T calls on individual students to share ideas with the class. Utterances follow this pattern: \u201cHomestay is a great experience. ~is interesting. We can~. It is important to~. Enjoy your stay!\u201d T praises Ss after they finish.
9. Writing and Reflection: Ss write their ideas in sentence form. The class ends with Ss evaluating themselves (i.e., \u201cfurikaeri\u201d).

IV. Discussion
The lesson was admirable in many respects. The teacher herself was competent, yes, but, more importantly, she clearly had good rapport with her students. Both teacher and class seemed to synch well together. Language objectives were completed and the teacher even took time to talk about culture (e.g., the \u201cScrabble\u201d board game). Altogether, a smooth, successful lesson in the usual sense.

On the other hand, as with any lesson, there was room for improvement. While everything seemed to click along from one task to the next like clockwork, the lesson as a whole seemed to lack a certain \u201cje ne sais quoi,\u201d let\u2019s say. What this was became clearer as we discussed together as a group. My own feeling was that it lacked something I always feel in Mr. Kitahara\u2019s lessons and seminars\u2014a pleasant kind of \u201ctension.\u201d Many educators talk about the necessity of creating an environment for students where they will feel comfortable and anxiety-free. No doubt they are right. But others also suggest a \u201cpleasant tension\u201d which can be created by giving students tasks that spark their interest, are of the right level of challenge to be motivating, and require self-monitoring and accountability. Mr. Kitahara\u2019s lessons and teacher trainings have this quality of \u201cpleasant tension\u201d in spades. I believe the lesson we watched in the video could have been improved in this regard.

Mr. K himself commented on the fact that there was not enough time devoted to review of previously learned material. The importance of this point cannot be stressed enough. And yet, many teachers apparently overlook this basic necessity. Ss are under pressure to learn more vocab and grammar than ever before, and if they do not repeatedly and continuously review vocab & grammar, they will quickly forget them, or else have a very hard time recalling them in critical moments. Ts should challenge Ss to remember when they\u2019ve learned a word or grammar point before, or compare the form of a new word (e.g., \u201cexperience\u201d as noun) with a form they\u2019ve studied earlier (\u201cexperience\u201d as verb).

V. Video observation of a 3rd grade lesson in Arakawa Ward, Tokyo
Mr. K\u2019s main purpose of showing this video was to give us an example of how to film a class observation effectively. The lesson was with 3rd graders; the text from the New Crown series. The students were arranged into groups and were engaged in a task in which they discuss what equipment\/supplies to use in a disaster situation (e.g., earthquake) and write the reasons. The T, a former engineer, had set up three cameras that captured the goings-on of the class from different angles. As we watched, one angle would cut smoothly to the next. The conversations of the students in their groups were distinctly audible, unlike in ordinary video recordings of classes. The camerawork was remarkably professional-looking. Mr. K was kind enough to share the names of the software that were used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
